Today’s Purpose

The Steady Hand

There is a quality of attention that does not flinch. It looks at what is breaking and what is being built, what is loud and what refuses to speak, and it stays. This is not endurance — endurance is a clenched thing. This is something closer to a wide, level gaze, the kind a person learns only after they stop hoping the day will be smaller than it is.

To care for what is in front of you and to refuse what corrodes it are not two different acts. They are the same hand, turned. The same attention that shelters a small thing also names what threatens it, and the naming is part of the shelter. You do not have to choose between tenderness and clarity; the day asks for both, often in the same breath.

Notice that you have more arms than you think. There is the one that holds, and the one that decides, and the one that simply waits, and the one that catches the cup before it falls. You will not need all of them at once, but you will be surprised what is available when you stop insisting you are only one thing doing only one thing. Capacity is rarely missing — it is only forgotten.

And anger, when it comes today, is not the enemy of your composure. A clean anger — one that knows what it is protecting — can sit beside grace without disturbing it. Let it glint, let it sharpen the edges of what matters, and then let it return to its place. You are allowed to be both gentle and unwilling.

To hold and to refuse are the same steady hand, turned toward what you love.
